How we research and evaluate software

Our methodology is designed to make the basis of each conclusion visible, while recognizing that the right tool depends on the reader and use case.

Product selection

We prioritize products that are relevant to US and UK readers, have a meaningful role in their category, or offer a useful point of comparison. Reader interest, product maturity, market availability, and editorial coverage gaps can all influence selection. Affiliate availability is not required.

Evidence and testing

Each review identifies its research basis. We distinguish hands-on use from vendor demonstrations, documentation research, and mixed research. We do not claim to have personally tested a product unless that happened.

Sources may include:

  • Hands-on product use and reproducible workflows.
  • Official product documentation, release notes, and pricing pages.
  • Provider demonstrations and support materials, labeled as such.
  • Reliable third-party evidence when a claim needs outside context.

We avoid unsupported performance, savings, security, and outcome claims. Vendor claims are attributed rather than presented as independently verified facts.

Pricing checks

Pricing is checked against the provider's public information around publication and material updates. We note when figures are starting prices, promotional, usage-based, or region-specific when that context is available. Prices, exchange rates, taxes, and plan details can change; the provider's current checkout terms control.

Scoring and rankings

Reviews use a ten-point editorial score. The assessment considers capability, usability, value, support and documentation, reliability, and fit for the intended audience. The relative importance of each factor can vary by category, and the written rationale is more useful than the number alone.

Best lists and comparisons consider use-case fit, evidence quality, meaningful limitations, and current availability. They are not a promise that one product is best for every reader.

Commercial relationships

Affiliate relationships are disclosed and do not guarantee favorable coverage. See our affiliate disclosure for how commissions and tracking work.

Updates and corrections

We review high-impact commercial pages when material product, pricing, or availability changes are identified and record material update dates. Coverage is also revisited on a risk-based schedule, with more volatile categories checked more often.

Readers and providers can submit a correction through the contact form. We verify the evidence before changing editorial conclusions and clearly update material inaccuracies.
